New sod only looks easy. The difference between a lawn that takes root and a lawn that dies in patches is what happens before and after the grass goes down: ground prep, soil contact, and the right watering schedule from day one. We handle all three, and because we are a sprinkler company first, your irrigation gets adjusted for new sod instead of fighting it.

Why Sod Fails in the Panhandle (and How We Prevent It)

Amarillo sits in a tough spot for new grass: high wind, intense sun, clay-heavy soil, and sprinkler systems that were dialed in for established lawns. Fresh sod needs more frequent, lighter watering than mature grass. Lay sod without changing the sprinkler schedule and the edges dry out and die first. That is the most common failure we get called to fix, and it is completely avoidable.

Our Sod Installation Process

1. Site prep

We remove old or dead grass, grade the area, and prepare the soil so roots have something to grab. Sod laid over hard, unprepared ground never roots properly.

2. Fresh sod, installed tight

We install sod varieties suited to Panhandle heat and wind, laid with staggered seams and tight joints so you do not get gaps, ridges, or dry lines between rows.

3. Irrigation adjusted for new sod

This is the part most landscapers skip. We check head coverage over the new grass, repair or move heads where needed, and program your controller with a new-sod watering schedule. When the sod is established, we set it back to a normal schedule.

4. Care instructions you can actually follow

You get a simple watering and mowing plan for the first 30 days, and a phone number to call if anything looks off.

Sod and Sprinklers, One Crew

Most sod jobs involve the sprinkler system: heads buried too low, lines cut during grading, coverage gaps that show up as brown stripes a month later. Because we have installed and repaired irrigation in Amarillo since 1974, you do not need two contractors pointing at each other. One crew preps the ground, lays the grass, and makes the water work. We can also repair your existing system or install new irrigation as part of the same project.

Where We Install Sod

Sod Installation FAQ

When is the best time to lay sod in Amarillo?

Spring through early fall is ideal for warm-season grasses. Sod can go down outside that window, but establishment is slower. We will tell you honestly whether to install now or wait.

How often should I water new sod?

Lightly and often at first, usually multiple short cycles per day for the first two weeks, then tapering down. We program this into your controller so you do not have to think about it.

Can you fix my sprinklers at the same time?

Yes, and we recommend it. Sod and irrigation done together is the whole point of hiring a sprinkler company for your sod.

Do you remove the old grass?

Yes. Site prep, removal, and grading are included in the job, not an extra you discover later.
